Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Lie

David’s face crumbled into a mask of perfectly rehearsed devastation. He fell to his knees right there on the sterile linoleum of the pediatric ICU, his hands gripping the edges of his tailored trousers. He sobbed, loud and echoing, a performance that would have broken my heart just twenty-four hours earlier.
But I didn't see a grieving father. I saw the faint smudge of peachy-pink foundation on his collar. I smelled the heavy, intoxicating scent of jasmine perfume—a scent that certainly did not belong to me, nor did it belong in a hospital ward.
“No,” he choked out, burying his face in his hands. “Elena, please tell me you’re lying. Please tell me my boy is okay.”
I didn't reach out to touch him. I didn't kneel beside him. I stood as still as a statue carved from ice. “He waited for you, David,” I said, my voice dead and flat. “He asked for you. But you were at a networking gala.”
David looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his performance faltering just for a fraction of a second when he met my deadened gaze. “My phone died,” he repeated, the lie tasting like ash in the air between us.

“I know,” I replied quietly. “You must have been so busy.”
I turned away from him and walked back into Leo’s room. I didn't want David’s tainted hands anywhere near my son's body. As I gathered Leo’s blue plastic astronaut and his small, folded clothes, my grief began to crystallize into something entirely new. It wasn't just sorrow anymore. It was rage. A cold, calculating rage that would soon burn David's entire world to the ground.
