Chapter 5 - The Mistress

I needed to see her. I needed to look into the eyes of the woman who had helped drain my son's life away.

I tracked Chloe to a high-end Pilates studio downtown. I parked my SUV across the street, gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white. She walked out in designer leggings, sipping an iced matcha, laughing on her cell phone. She looked so carefree, so utterly untouched by the tragedy that had leveled my existence.

I waited until she unlocked her Audi. I stepped out of the shadows and approached her.

"Chloe," I said.

She spun around, her smile dropping instantly as she recognized me from the Facebook photos she had undoubtedly stalked. "Elena? What... what are you doing here?"

"I know everything," I said, keeping my voice eerily calm. "I know about the resort. I know about the money. And I know about the $1.5 million David just transferred into an account in your name to steal from a very dangerous man."

Her face went sheet white. "What? No! I don't know anything about any money!"

"The Russian mafia doesn't care about your excuses, Chloe," I smiled, a cold, terrifying thing. "David set you up to take the fall. The authorities are already looking into it. If I were you, I'd pack a very small bag and disappear before Volkov's men figure out where you live."

I turned and walked away, leaving her trembling on the pavement. The seed of paranoia was planted. They would turn on each other like starved wolves.
