Chapter 4 - Setting the Trap

Two weeks after the funeral, the house was deathly quiet. David was supposedly "working late" again, claiming the medical bills had put us in a tight spot and he needed to secure a massive new client, a Russian investor named Volkov, who was known in underground circles for being utterly unforgiving with his money.
I knew exactly where David was. He was at Chloe’s loft.
I sat at the kitchen island, a burner phone in my hand, and dialed the IRS tip line. I didn't stop there. Over the next four hours, I meticulously forwarded the evidence of David’s embezzlement from his clients' accounts to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
But federal agencies move slowly, and I wanted immediate destruction.

I logged into David’s encrypted work server. Using his credentials, I wired $1.5 million of Volkov’s investment capital directly into an offshore account. An account I had set up entirely under Chloe’s name, using the personal information I had scraped from David’s laptop.
Then, I drafted a fake email chain from David to Chloe, detailing their "master plan" to steal Volkov's money and run away to the Cayman Islands. I left the laptop open just enough so that when the authorities inevitably seized it, the evidence would be the first thing they found.
