Chapter 9 - The First Word

Six weeks passed since the terrifying night of the lockdown.
The mansion felt entirely different, filled with warm sunlight, fresh flowers, and a sudden sense of profound peace.
Clara had been promoted from a disgraced hired nurse to the official head of Silas’s medical care and recovery.
Julian had used his immense wealth and legal influence to completely clear Clara's nursing record, exposing the hospital administrators who had wrongly accused her.
She was no longer a frightened, weary woman hiding from her past.
She was vibrant, confident, and fiercely protective of the little boy in the west wing.
On a bright Tuesday afternoon, Julian was sitting in Silas’s room, reviewing some business contracts on his tablet.
Clara was sitting on the edge of the bed, gently guiding Silas through a series of complex physical therapy exercises.
"Come on, captain, you have to push a little harder today," Clara encouraged, smiling warmly at the boy.
Silas was staring out the window, watching a group of small birds flutter around the branches of a giant oak tree.
Julian watched them, feeling a deep, quiet gratitude for the woman who had literally saved his entire world.
Suddenly, Silas reached his small, trembling hand out and pointed toward the glass window.
Julian froze, dropping his tablet onto the floor as his heart skipped a heavy beat.
Silas opened his mouth, his throat working hard as he tried to push air past vocal cords that had been silent for over a year.
"B-bird," Silas whispered, his voice incredibly raspy, faint, and perfectly clear.
Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hands as tears of absolute joy sprang to her eyes.
Julian fell to his knees beside the bed, grabbing his son's small hand and weeping openly for the first time since Elena died.
"Yes, Silas," Julian cried, kissing the boy's knuckles over and over again.

"It is a beautiful bird, my brave, wonderful boy."
The silence was finally broken, and the healing had officially begun.
