Chapter 1 - The Click of the Lock

Then, the gentle atmosphere in the bedroom vanished completely.
Julian watched through the high-definition monitor as Clara’s bright smile instantly faded into something cold and intensely focused.
She stood up from the edge of Silas’s bed, her movements suddenly sharp and completely devoid of the warmth she had shown just seconds prior.
She walked quickly toward the heavy oak double doors that separated the boy’s room from the rest of the silent Connecticut mansion.
Julian leaned closer to the glass of his monitors, his heart suddenly pounding a heavy rhythm against his ribs.
He watched in absolute disbelief as Clara reached out and firmly turned the brass deadbolt.
The heavy, metallic click of the lock echoed softly through the hidden audio feed in Julian's study.
She had just broken his absolute, unforgivable rule.
Julian felt a cold spike of pure adrenaline shoot straight through his veins.
But what she did next completely froze the breath in his lungs.
Clara turned her back to the locked door and reached deep into the pocket of her plain gray apron.
When her hand emerged, the dim glow of the bedside lamp caught the terrifying, undeniable glint of a medical syringe.
It was large, completely filled with a clear liquid, and capped with a long steel needle.
Julian did not scream, and he did not waste time hitting the security panic button on his desk.
He simply moved with the violent, explosive speed of a man who was about to lose the only thing he had left in the world.
He ripped open the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk and grabbed the cold, heavy steel of his Sig Sauer pistol.
He did not bother to check the safety, because he already knew it was off.
Julian sprinted out of his study, his leather shoes slamming hard against the polished marble floors of the mansion.
He bypassed the grand staircase entirely, taking the shadowed back hallway that led directly to the west wing.
His mind was racing with horrific, disjointed images of his wife’s crushed vehicle on that icy Colorado road.
He had trusted a driver that night, and it had cost Elena her life.
He had trusted this broken, disgraced nurse tonight, and it was about to cost his son everything.
Julian reached the heavy oak doors of the west wing in less than thirty seconds, his chest heaving with rage.
He did not knock, and he did not demand that Clara open the door.
He raised his right leg and kicked the heavy wood with every ounce of physical strength he possessed.
The brass deadbolt shattered instantly, tearing the wooden doorframe to violent splinters as the doors flew open.
Julian burst into the room, raising the pistol perfectly level with Clara’s chest.
"Step away from my son right now!" Julian roared, his voice shaking the glass windows of the bedroom.
Clara whipped around, her eyes wide with shock, but she did not drop the syringe.
Instead of attacking Silas, she threw her own body directly over the boy, shielding him from Julian's weapon.
"Do not shoot!" Clara screamed back at him, her voice lacking any trace of guilt or fear.
"I am not hurting him, Mr. Vance, I am saving his life!"
Julian kept the gun aimed squarely at her heart, his finger trembling dangerously on the trigger.
"You locked the door, and you pulled a needle on a paralyzed child," Julian stated, his voice dropping to a deadly, icy whisper.
"Give me one single reason why I shouldn't put a bullet through your chest right now."
Clara slowly raised her free hand in surrender, while keeping the syringe tightly gripped in her other hand.
"Because this syringe isn't for Silas," she said, breathing heavily.
"It is to test the IV bag that your beautiful fiancée brought into this house an hour ago."
Julian froze, the heavy pistol suddenly feeling like a block of lead in his hands.
He looked past Clara, staring at the clear bag of saline dripping slowly into his son’s arm.
"Victoria is not even here," Julian argued, though a sickening feeling began to twist in his gut.
"She left for a charity gala in Manhattan at seven o'clock."
Clara slowly shook her head, her eyes locked firmly on his.
"She came back through the staff entrance at nine, Mr. Vance."
May you like
"And I watched her inject something into your son's pain medication when she thought no one was looking."
Julian stared at the terrified but defiant nurse, realizing his entire world was about to violently collapse for the second time.
