Chapter 8 - The Confession

As the officers began to escort Elena out of the bed and into a wheelchair, she suddenly stopped struggling.
She turned her head to look at me, her eyes completely devoid of the warmth I had loved for a decade.
“I didn't want to be a mother, Mark,” she said, her voice dropping into a chilling, hollow monotone.
“I never wanted children, but you wouldn't stop begging, and I was so afraid you would leave me.”
“When the clinic told me about the mistake, it felt like the universe was finally giving me a way out.”
“I could give the baby to your sister, I could get rich, and I could finally be free of this domestic prison.”
Her words hit me like physical blows, destroying every happy memory I thought we had built together.
“You are broken, Elena,” I replied, my voice remarkably steady despite the hurricane of emotions inside me.
“You traded a human life for money, and you manipulated everyone who ever loved you to get it.”
The officers wheeled her out into the hallway, leaving behind a profound emptiness in the hospital room.
