Chapter 5 - The Medical Emergency

Before Elena could utter another pathetic excuse, a sudden, terrifying sound pierced the room.

The baby, who had been crying robustly, suddenly let out a sharp, unnatural gasp.

His cries completely stopped, replaced by a horrifying, wet choking sound.

Sarah’s eyes widened in alarm as she quickly laid the infant flat on the examination table.

“Doctor!” Sarah yelled, her professional composure breaking for a split second.

Dr. Hayes practically dove across the room, pushing past me and Clara to reach the tiny boy.

I watched in absolute horror as the baby's tiny face began to turn a terrifying shade of blue.

“He is in respiratory distress,” Dr. Hayes barked, grabbing a tiny oxygen mask from the wall unit.

“Call the NICU, tell them we have a code blue neonate, and get the crash cart in here right now!” he ordered.

Suddenly, all the anger and betrayal evaporated from my mind, replaced by an overwhelming, primal fear for the child.

I didn't care whose biology was running through his veins; I had spent nine months loving him as my son.

Clara screamed, rushing forward to grab the edge of the table, her face completely panic-stricken.

Elena, however, remained sitting up in her bed, watching the chaotic scene with a cold, detached expression that chilled me to the bone.

Nurses flooded into the room, pushing a massive cart of medical equipment through the narrow doorway.
