Chapter 1 - The Impossible Truth
The hospital room descended into a heavy, suffocating silence that made it hard for anyone to breathe.
The only sound echoing off the sterile white walls was the frantic, high-pitched wailing of the newborn boy in Sarah’s arms.
I stood completely frozen, my hand still hovering over the custody documents with the pen trembling in my grasp.
Dr. Hayes stood in the doorway, his chest heaving as if he had sprinted all the way from the hospital laboratory.
He clutched a red medical folder so tightly that his knuckles were entirely white.
Elena’s face, previously a mask of cold indifference, had instantly drained of all its color, leaving her looking like a ghost against the hospital pillows.
“What do you mean, her blood work changes everything?” I demanded, my voice cracking under the immense weight of the tension.
Dr. Hayes stepped fully into the room, his eyes darting between me, Elena, and my sister Clara who stood quietly in the corner.
“We ran a routine post-delivery panel on Elena to check for any signs of infection,” the doctor began, his voice surprisingly steady despite the chaotic atmosphere.
“The results showed something that is medically impossible given the circumstances of this birth.”
Elena let out a ragged gasp, her hands gripping the thin hospital sheet so hard I thought she might tear the fabric.
“Don’t say it,” she whispered, her voice trembling with a raw, undeniable terror.
“She is blood type AB negative,” Dr. Hayes continued, completely ignoring her desperate plea.
“We cord-tested the infant immediately after delivery, and the baby is O positive.”
I stared at him, my brain struggling to process the medical jargon while my heart pounded violently against my ribs.
“I don’t understand,” I muttered, looking back and forth between my pale wife and the grim doctor.
