Chapter 7 - The Arrest

As the NICU team carefully placed the stabilized baby into a transport incubator, heavy footsteps echoed down the hospital hallway.

Two uniformed police officers walked into the room, followed closely by the social worker who had slipped out during the emergency.

“Elena Vance?” the taller officer asked, stepping directly toward the hospital bed.

Elena quickly shoved her phone under her pillow, her facade of calm finally cracking into genuine panic.

“What is the meaning of this?” she demanded, trying to sit up straighter to assert some kind of dominance.

“We have been informed of a suspected illegal adoption scheme and extortion,” the officer stated clearly.

“We also have a warrant to search your financial records regarding a recent wire transfer of five million dollars from the Horizon Fertility Clinic.”

Elena let out a piercing scream, kicking her legs against the blankets like a spoiled toddler having a tantrum.

“You can't arrest me, I just gave birth!” she wailed, looking toward me for a rescue that was never going to come.

“Medical clearance has already been approved by the attending physician,” Dr. Hayes said coldly, not even looking in her direction.

The female officer stepped forward, gently but firmly pulling Elena’s wrists together.
