The next ten minutes were a blur of flashing lights, medical acronyms, and pure, unadulterated nightmare.

Dr. Hayes expertly maneuvered a tiny tube down the baby's throat, working with a speed and precision that left me breathless.

“Heart rate is dropping, he is bradycardic!” a nurse shouted, her fingers pressed against the baby's tiny chest.

“Starting compressions,” Dr. Hayes announced, using only two fingers to pump the infant's fragile heart.

I stood frozen against the wall, tears streaming down my face as I prayed to a God I hadn't spoken to in years.

Clara was on her knees, sobbing uncontrollably and begging David's spirit to protect their final child.

Through the chaos, I happened to glance over at Elena, who was quietly checking her cell phone.

The sheer sociopathy of her actions finally broke whatever remaining love I held in my heart for her.

“Clear!” the doctor yelled, sending a tiny, calibrated shock into the newborn's chest.

We all held our breath, the silence in the room returning just as deafeningly as it had when the truth was first revealed.

Suddenly, a loud, beautiful, and furious wail erupted from the baby's lungs.

“We have a heartbeat, his color is returning,” the nurse sighed in immense relief, wiping sweat from her forehead.

I collapsed into a nearby chair, burying my face in my hands as the adrenaline left my body in a rushing wave.
