Two weeks later, the fallout was absolute and spectacular.
The District Attorney had opened a massive investigation into the family’s finances.
It turned out Marcus had been embezzling millions from the trust fund meant for Maya's future.
Chloe had discovered his theft and was blackmailing him for a cut of the money.
Maya had simply been playing hide-and-seek and stumbled upon them arguing about the stolen cash.
They hurt her because they panicked, terrified that a five-year-old might repeat what she heard.
I sat on my living room couch, watching the local news with Sarah.
The screen showed police cruisers parked outside my father’s massive gates.
Marcus was led out in handcuffs, his expensive suit wrinkled and ruined.
Chloe followed shortly after, sobbing hysterically as reporters snapped photos of her downfall.
My father was also indicted for attempting to bribe public officials to cover up the mess.
Their empire of lies had completely crumbled.
