Chapter 6 - The Custody Threat
By 2:00 PM, we were sitting in the office of Elena Rostova, a fierce child advocacy attorney.
Before we could even finish telling her our story, my phone rang.
It was a notification from family court.
My father and Marcus had already filed an emergency injunction for temporary guardianship of Maya.
They claimed my apartment was unsafe and that I had violently attacked Chloe unprovoked.
Elena looked at the digital filing on her computer screen and scoffed.
“They move fast, but they are arrogant,” Elena said, tapping her pen.
“They are trying to use their wealth to steamroll you before you can fight back.”
I felt a brief moment of despair, knowing how much power my father wielded in this town.
But then I remembered the audio recording in my pocket.
I played it for Elena.
Her eyes widened, and a sharp, predatory smile spread across her face.
“This changes absolutely everything,” she said.
“Not only does this prove child abuse, but it hints at financial fraud regarding the family trust.”
Elena explained that we could use the recording to get a restraining order against my entire family.
Furthermore, we could hand the audio over to the district attorney for a criminal investigation.
