Chapter 4 - The Hidden Truth

We finally returned to my small apartment just before midnight.

Maya was exhausted, falling asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.

I sat in the living room in the dark, staring at the wall, trying to plan my next move.

I needed proof that couldn't be twisted by expensive lawyers.

I remembered that Maya had been wearing her smart-watch.

It was a cheap kids' device, but it had a voice memo function she loved playing with.

I quietly snuck into her room and retrieved the bright pink watch from her bedside table.

My hands shook as I scrolled through the tiny menus.

There was a recording saved from 7:15 PM, right around the time I found her in the backyard.

I pressed play, holding the speaker close to my ear.

First, there was just the sound of Maya giggling.

Then, Chloe’s sharp, nasty voice cut through the audio.

“I told you to drop it, you little brat!” Chloe hissed on the recording.

Maya started to cry.

Then, Marcus’s voice echoed clearly.

“Grab her arm, Chloe, don’t let her go tell David what she heard us say about the trust fund.”

A loud thud followed, and Maya screamed.

My heart pounded furiously against my ribs.

They hadn't just hurt her for being annoying.

Maya had accidentally overheard them plotting something regarding the family money.

I immediately backed up the audio file to my cloud drive and emailed it to myself.

They had just handed me the weapon I needed to destroy them.
