Chapter 5 - The Mother's Fury

The next morning, there was a frantic knocking at my apartment door.

I looked through the peephole and saw Sarah, my ex-wife and Maya’s mother.

We had a rocky past, but we co-parented peacefully.

I opened the door, and she pushed past me, her eyes wild with panic.

“Where is she? The police called me!” Sarah demanded.

I led her to the bedroom, where Maya was just waking up.

Sarah gasped when she saw the purple bruise on our daughter's forehead.

She fell to her knees by the bed, sobbing and gently hugging Maya.

I pulled Sarah into the hallway to explain everything that had happened.

I played her the recording from the smartwatch.

Sarah’s face morphed from profound sorrow to sheer, murderous rage.

“I am going to kill them,” Sarah whispered, her fists clenched white.

“We aren't going to kill them, we are going to put them in a federal prison,” I told her.

Sarah looked at me, a new level of respect and agreement in her eyes.

“My family is wealthy, David, but yours is ruthless,” she said.

“We need the best legal representation in this state by noon.”

For the first time since the divorce, Sarah and I were a completely united front.

Nobody was going to get away with touching our little girl.
