Chapter 10 - A New Beginning

Six months had passed since the terrible day at the garden party.

The scars on Maya’s wrist had completely faded, leaving behind smooth, healthy skin.

More importantly, the fear in her eyes was totally gone.

Sarah and I had decided to move out of the city, buying a beautiful, quiet house near the coast.

We weren't back together romantically, but we were the strongest team Maya could ever ask for.

Maya was thriving in her new kindergarten, making friends and playing without a care in the world.

Marcus and Chloe were currently sitting in federal prison awaiting trial without bail.

My father’s reputation was in ruins, his fortune seized by federal investigators.

I watched through the kitchen window as Maya ran across our new, modest backyard.

She wasn't running from monsters in designer clothes anymore.

She was chasing a yellow butterfly, her laughter echoing loudly in the warm afternoon air.

I stepped out onto the porch, holding a cup of coffee, finally at peace.

I had lost my biological family, but I had saved my real one.

We were safe, we were free, and we were never looking back.
