Chapter 3 - Cutting the Lifeline

Monday morning arrived with a clear, crisp sunrise.

Arthur sat in his home office, sipping a black coffee while staring at his banking dashboard on his laptop.

He clicked the first button, immediately freezing the joint credit card he had issued to his mother.

He clicked the second button, canceling the automatic monthly allowance transferred to his father's account.

Finally, he called his property manager regarding the luxury condo his parents currently lived in.

“Send them a formal thirty-day eviction notice,” Arthur instructed the manager over the phone.

“Are you sure, sir?” the manager asked, clearly surprised.

“I have never been more sure of anything in my life,” Arthur replied firmly.

Less than two hours later, Arthur’s office phone rang, the caller ID displaying his mother’s number.

He put it on speakerphone and leaned back in his leather chair.

“Arthur, my card was just declined at the country club in front of everyone!” Margaret screamed hysterically.

“I know,” Arthur said calmly. “I canceled it.”

“You cannot punish us for teaching your spoiled children some manners!” Richard bellowed in the background.

“The condo is in my name, and your eviction notice is being taped to the door as we speak,” Arthur stated flatly.

The line went dead silent for five agonizing seconds.

“You wouldn’t dare put your own parents on the street,” Margaret whispered, her voice finally losing its arrogant edge.

“Watch me,” Arthur said, and hung up the phone.
