Chapter 7 - The Flight South

The escape from the cabin was a blur of freezing wind and roaring engines. Julian had uncovered the heavy, armored SUV the hitmen had hidden in the brush down the logging trail. It was a tactical vehicle, equipped with reinforced glass and four-wheel drive—the exact kind of machine needed to tear through fifteen miles of snow-choked mountain roads.

Elena sat in the passenger seat, clutching Maisie tightly in her lap while the three spaniel puppies whimpered inside a cardboard box in the footwell. Julian drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting near the suppressed 9mm in his lap, his eyes scanning every dark bend in the forest road with clinical intensity.

"We can't go to the local police," Elena said, her voice shaking slightly as the cabin disappeared behind them in the dark. "Once they see two bodies in my yard, they'll arrest me as an accessory to murder."

"The police in this county are half-owned by Vincente's union contacts anyway," Julian replied, steering the heavy SUV around a sharp, icy curve without hitting the brakes. "You'd be dead in a holding cell before morning. Your only safety now is inside my perimeter."

"And where is that?"

"My family's estate in the Berkshires," Julian said. "It's a fortress. Highly secured, private airstrip, and guarded by men who have served my father since before I was born. Vincente can't touch you there."

Maisie looked up from Elena’s chest, her wide eyes fixing on Julian's profile in the dashboard lights. "Are you a soldier, Mr. Julian?"

Julian’s hardened expression softened for a fraction of a second. He glanced in the rearview mirror at the little girl who had defended her mother with a stuffed bear. "something like that, little one. I protect my family. And right now, you and your mom are part of my family."

They drove southward through the night, leaving the frozen wilderness of Maine behind as they crossed into New Hampshire and finally Massachusetts. By dawn, the snowdrifts gave way to cleared, paved highways, but the tension inside the vehicle never dissipated. Every passing black sedan, every lingering gaze from a truck driver at a gas station, sent Julian’s hand drifting back toward his weapon.

Around noon, they turned off the main highway onto a private, gated mountain road in western Massachusetts. Ten-foot iron gates flanked by stone guardhouses barred the entrance. As Julian approached, two men in heavy tactical coats stepped out with assault rifles at the ready.

Julian lowered his window just enough for the sunlight to catch his face.

The guards froze. Their weapons instantly lowered, their eyes widening in absolute shock. "Mr. Rossi!" one of them shouted, frantically waving toward the guardhouse. "Open the gates! The Boss is alive! Call the compound!"

The massive iron gates swung open, and the SUV surged down a two-mile drive lined with ancient oak trees. At the end of the drive sat a sprawling, stone manor house overlooking a frozen valley—a modern castle protected by high stone walls and patrolling security teams.

As Julian pulled the SUV to a halt in front of the sweeping marble steps, a dozen men swarmed out of the front doors, cheering and shouting in relief. But Julian ignored them all. He stepped out of the vehicle, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door for Elena.

He offered her his large, scarred hand. "Welcome to my world, Elena," he said softly. "You're safe here. Nobody touches you ever again."
