Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Within

The atmosphere in the Rossi estate shifted from defensive vigilance to absolute preparation for war. By midnight, the compound was swarming with over forty armed men. Vehicles were being plated with ballistic armor, crates of tactical gear were stacked in the courtyard, and Julian sat at the head of the formal dining table, mapping out a coordinated strike on Vincente’s fortified stronghold in South Boston.

Elena couldn't sleep. She sat in the shadowed balcony overlooking the courtyard, watching the men prepare. She was a nurse who had dedicated her life to preserving human life, yet here she was, quietly praying that the man below would survive the slaughter he was about to initiate.

Around 2:00 AM, she noticed something strange.

A single black sedan had parked near the western perimeter wall, outside the main floodlights. A figure in a heavy coat stepped out of the shadows of the guardhouse and handed a small, metallic briefcase through the driver's window of the sedan. The driver flashed his headlights twice—a tactical signal—before reversing silently into the woods.

Elena frowned. Julian had ordered total radio silence and lockdown; no vehicles were supposed to enter or leave without his personal clearance.

She left her balcony, slipping down the back service staircase into the lower administrative halls. As she neared the security monitoring room, she heard low, urgent whispering drifting through an ajar door.

She pressed her back against the cool stone wall and listened.

"The strike team leaves at dawn," a familiar voice rasped. It was Marco, the capo with the scarred neck who had been running Julian’s personal security detail since their arrival. "Rossi will be in the lead armored SUV. I've already disabled the GPS tracking and delayed the backup convoy by ten minutes. When he enters the industrial park on D Street, Vincente’s shooters will have a clean crossfire."

"What about the woman and the kid?" a second voice asked.

"Vincente wants them alive," Marco replied coldly. "Once Rossi is dead in Boston, my boys will breach the guest wing here. We take the nurse and the brat to Providence. Vincente can use them to force Silvio and the remaining loyalists to surrender the bank accounts."

Elena’s blood ran ice-cold. Betrayal wasn't just outside in Boston; it was right here inside the fortress. Marco had sold them out to Vincente.

She didn't waste a second. She turned and sprinted barefoot down the corridor toward Julian’s private study. She threw the double doors open without knocking, startling three capos who were leaning over a set of blueprints.

Julian instantly dropped his pen, his hand reaching for his sidearm as his eyes locked onto her pale, breathless face. "Elena? What is it?"

"It's Marco," she gasped, gripping the edge of the mahogany desk to steady herself. "He's a traitor, Julian! I just heard him in the security room! He disabled your convoy's GPS and coordinated an ambush on D Street for dawn! And when you're dead... they're coming back here to kidnap me and Maisie!"

The room fell into a deathly, suffocating silence. The three loyal capos stared at Julian, waiting for his command.

Julian didn't blink. The slight softening of his demeanor that Elena had seen over the past few days vanished completely, replaced by the terrifying, cold-blooded aura of the supreme boss of the Rossi crime family.

"Silvio," Julian said quietly without looking away from Elena. "Lock down the estate. Cut the internal phone lines. And bring Marco to the wine cellar. Alive."
