Chapter 14 - The Foundation

Six months after the fall of Vincente, summer had settled over the Berkshire hills in a blaze of emerald green and wildflower blossoms. The Rossi estate had been completely transformed; what was once a quiet, intimidating mafia stronghold now felt like a vibrant, living home.

The Vance-Rossi Wildlife and Veterinary Rehabilitation Center was officially open for business. Located at the base of the mountain, the facility was a masterpiece of modern architectural design and veterinary science, entirely funded by the Rossi philanthropic foundation. Every morning at 7:30 AM, Elena drove down the winding estate road in her new SUV—with Barnaby, Tank, and Scout riding in the back—to treat everything from injured bald eagles and orphaned red foxes to domestic horses and working farm dogs from the surrounding valley.

She was no longer a blacklisted, exhausted woman scraping by on freezing farm visits; she was the chief medical director of the most advanced animal trauma center in New England.

At the manor, Julian had adjusted to his new role as a legitimate corporate titan with surprising grace. He still possessed the intimidating physical presence and razor-sharp mind of a man who had survived the underworld, but the cold, obsidian hardness in his eyes had melted away whenever he stepped inside the front doors of his home.

On a warm Friday afternoon, Elena returned from the clinic early to find an unexpected scene in the formal sunroom.

Julian, dressed in a tailored three-piece suit that cost more than her old cabin, was sitting cross-legged on the Persian rug. Around him were spread dozens of pink and purple plastic building blocks. Seven-year-old Maisie was wearing a plastic princess tiara, and she had placed a matching, sparkling silver tiara squarely on top of Julian’s dark, styled hair.

"The drawbridge needs to be higher, Mr. Julian," Maisie instructed seriously, holding up a plastic dragon. "Otherwise, the dragon can't get into the courtyard to protect the puppies."

"Tactically speaking, you want a narrow entry point to limit the enemy's approach, Maisie," Julian explained with utmost gravity, carefully placing a pink block on the tower. "But if the dragon is on our payroll, we can widen the perimeter."

Elena leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms as a quiet, overwhelming wave of love washed over her. She watched the feared ex-mafia boss of Boston debating castle defense strategy with a seven-year-old girl while wearing a rhinestone tiara.

Julian caught her eye from across the room. He didn't look embarrassed in the slightest; instead, his lips curved into that familiar, dangerous smirk that made her heart skip a beat.

"Your daughter is a hard taskmaster, Dr. Vance," Julian said, adjusting the sparkling tiara on his brow. "She just rejected my proposal for an armored moat."

"She gets her stubbornness from me," Elena laughed, walking over and dropping a kiss onto the top of his tiara-crowned head. She looked down at Maisie, whose skin was golden from the summer sun, her breathing deep and effortless without a single hint of her old winter wheezing. "How was your horseback lesson today, bug?"

"Silvio let me trot!" Maisie beamed, scooping up Scout, who was trying to chew on a plastic drawbridge. "And Julian said if I practice every day, I can get my own saddle for my birthday!"

Julian looked up at Elena, his dark eyes softening with a warmth that was reserved entirely for the two of them. He reached out, catching Elena’s hand and pulling her gently down onto the rug beside him, surrounding her with the secure, unbreakable fortress they had built together from the ashes of their pasts.
