Chapter 15 - Shadows of the Past

Despite their new life of legitimate peace, Julian never completely lowered his guard. You couldn't dismantle a thirty-year-old syndicate and transition billions of dollars into legal commerce without leaving a few disgruntled ghosts in the shadows.
On a rainy Tuesday in late August, Elena was working late at the rehabilitation clinic, performing emergency reconstructive surgery on a working border collie that had been caught in a barbed-wire fence. Her two veterinary technicians had gone home for the evening, leaving the clinic quiet except for the hum of the surgical monitors and the patter of rain against the glass roof of the atrium.
Around 8:30 PM, as she was bandaging the dog’s leg, the front bell of the clinic chimed.
Elena wiped her hands on a sterile towel and walked out into the reception lobby, expecting to see a local farmer with an emergency case. Instead, standing by the front desk, soaking wet from the rain, was a woman in her late fifties wearing a faded, expensive trench coat. She had sharp, aristocratic features that looked chillingly familiar, though her eyes were hollow with years of bitterness and grief.
"We're closed for regular visits, ma'am," Elena said politely from behind the counter. "Is it an emergency?"
The woman turned around, her dark eyes scanning Elena from head to toe with chilling evaluation. "You must be the nurse. The one who pulled my nephew out of the ice."
Elena froze. Her hand instinctively drifted toward the silent alarm button mounted beneath the reception desk that linked directly to the Rossi estate guardhouse. "Who are you?"
"My name is Beatrice Rossi," the woman said coldly. "Carmine's younger sister. Julian’s aunt."
Elena didn't press the alarm just yet, but she kept her distance. Julian had mentioned Beatrice once—she had married into a rival New York crime family thirty years ago and had been estranged from the Boston faction ever since Carmine refused to back her husband in a union dispute.
"If you're looking for Julian, he isn't here," Elena said, keeping her voice even and professional. "He's at the estate."
"I don't want to see Julian," Beatrice spat, stepping closer to the counter, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched her damp purse. "He ruined our family! He handed Carmine's legacy over to the feds, he put Vincente in a cage, and he turned our empire into a collection of shopping malls and charity hospitals! Do you know how many men lost their livelihoods because your boy-king decided to go straight?"
"He saved lives, Beatrice," Elena countered firmly, her hazel eyes hardening. "He stopped the killings. He chose a future over a graveyard."
"He chose you!" Beatrice snarled, reaching into her trench coat. "You bewitched him with your little country act! If Carmine were alive, he would have put a bullet in you before he let you turn his heir into a weak, domesticated coward!"
Beatrice pulled a small, silver .38 revolver from her coat pocket, leveling the barrel directly at Elena’s chest.
"I'm going to take away the thing that made him weak," Beatrice whispered, a manic, desperate light dancing in her eyes. "Then Julian will remember who he really is."
Elena didn't scream. Her years of handling panicked, dangerous predators in trauma bays and open fields took over. She looked at the trembling gun barrel, then directly into Beatrice’s erratic, bloodshot eyes.
"If you pull that trigger, Beatrice," Elena said in a slow, hypnotic, icy voice, "you won't make Julian a mobster again. You will simply make him the man who hunts you down and peels your skin off inch by inch. Look at my face. You know who my husband is. Do you really think you can hide from him?"

Beatrice hesitated, her finger trembling on the trigger as the sheer, terrifying reality of Julian Rossi’s reputation crashed over her.
In that three-second pause of hesitation, the glass double doors of the clinic lobby shattered inward with the force of a battering ram.
