Chapter 17 - The Wedding of the Year

By October, the Berkshire valley was painted in brilliant shades of ruby, amber, and gold. It was the perfect backdrop for what the local New England society pages were calling the most intriguing wedding of the decade—the union of the secretive, retired corporate billionaire Julian Rossi and the renowned veterinary trauma surgeon, Dr. Elena Vance.

They didn't marry in a grand cathedral in Boston or a luxury hotel in New York; they married on the sweeping green lawn of the Rossi estate, overlooking the mountain valley where their new life had begun.

The guest list was a fascinating, beautiful collision of two entirely different worlds. On one side of the aisle sat dignified veterinary professors, local ranchers, wildlife rehabilitators, and Elena's old nursing colleagues from Boston who had been quietly invited by Julian after he cleared her name. On the other side sat impeccably dressed Italian-American businessmen, retired union bosses, and loyal capos like Silvio and Matteo, wearing tailored suits and wiping sentimental tears from their weathered faces.

Elena took everyone's breath away as she walked down the white silk runner escorted by Silvio, who had proudly asked for the honor of acting as her father for the day. She wore a stunning, long-sleeved ivory lace gown that complemented her dark auburn hair, her hazel eyes shining with unshakeable happiness.

Waiting for her at the altar under a canopy of white roses stood Julian. He wore a custom black tuxedo that accentuated his broad, powerful build, his dark eyes fixed entirely on her with an expression of profound, reverence and adoration that made the surrounding crowd fade into absolute insignificance.

And standing right between them, acting as the official Maid of Honor and Ring Bearer, was eight-year-old Maisie. She wore a fluffy white tulle dress with a pink sash, holding a velvet pillow bearing two custom platinum wedding bands. Sitting obediently at her feet, wearing matching white silk bows around their collars, were Barnaby, Scout, and Tank—now full-grown, healthy spaniels who guarded their little mistress with absolute loyalty.

When the magistrate asked for the vows, Julian didn't read from a piece of paper. He took Elena's hands in his, his scars rough against her smooth skin, and spoke clear enough for the entire valley to hear.

"You found me in the dark, bleeding in the freezing water," Julian said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "When the rest of the world would have let me drown, you pulled me onto the ice, healed my wounds, and taught me what it truly means to live for something greater than power or survival. You are my heart, my peace, and my home, Elena. I swear my life, my loyalty, and my soul to you and Maisie, today and for all the days of my life."

Tears of pure joy spilled down Elena's cheeks as she slid the heavy platinum ring onto his finger—right beside his old gold signet ring.

"I took an oath once to preserve life without hesitation," Elena replied, her voice steady and clear. "And that oath brought me straight to you, Julian. You gave me back my voice, you protected my child, and you built a fortress of love around us when we had nothing left to lose. I love you, my brave, stubborn husband. Always and forever."

When the magistrate officially declared them husband and wife, the applause that erupted across the mountain lawn was deafening. Capos cheered, ranchers whistled, and Julian wrapped his arm around Elena's waist, lifting her off her feet as he kissed her with a fierce, possessive passion that promised a lifetime of unbreakable protection and boundless love.
