Chapter 16 - The Wrath of the King

Before Beatrice could even turn her head toward the shattering glass, a massive shadow slammed into her from the side. The silver revolver flew from her grip, skittering across the polished reception floor, while a pair of steel-jawed hands pinned her violently against the brick wall of the lobby.

It was Julian.

He had arrived in his armored SUV without his headlights on, alerted by his personal security detail who monitored the clinic's exterior cameras 24/7. Behind him, four elite capos with drawn tactical sidearms flooded the lobby, immediately securing the perimeter and retrieving the discarded revolver.

Julian held his aunt against the wall by her collar, his face a terrifying mask of pure, unadulterated fury. The gentle father who had played with building blocks hours earlier was completely gone; in his place stood the lethal, apex predator of New England, radiating a dark, suffocating violence that made the air in the room turn cold.

"Julian... please..." Beatrice choked out, her arrogant defiance instantly evaporating into abject terror as she looked into her nephew's obsidian eyes.

"You brought a weapon into my wife's hospital," Julian whispered, his voice so low and vibrating with menace that it rattled the glass panes. "You aimed a gun at the mother of my child."

"I am your blood, Julian!" she sobbed, shrinking against the bricks. "I am Carmine's sister!"

"Carmine is dead," Julian replied coldly, not loosening his grip an inch. "And the only blood I recognize in this world is standing behind that counter."

He turned his head slightly, his eyes searching Elena's face with desperate, terrifying intensity. "Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine, Julian," Elena said steadily, stepping out from behind the counter and walking toward him. Her calm, soothing presence acted as an immediate anchor to his boiling rage. She placed her hand gently over his massive, rigid forearm. "Let her go. She's a sad, bitter woman living in the past. She isn't worth your soul."

Julian stared at Elena for a long second, feeling the warm, steady pressure of her hand against his tense muscles. Slowly, deliberately, the lethal tension drained from his broad shoulders. He released Beatrice, letting the elderly woman slump to the floor, weeping and trembling in shock.

Julian turned to his lead capo, Silvio's son, Matteo.

"Take her to the private airstrip," Julian ordered coldly, wiping his hands on a silk handkerchief as if he had just touched filth. "Put her on a charter plane to Sicily. If she ever sets foot on North American soil again, or if she ever breathes Elena's name to anyone in New York... don't call the authorities. Just drop her in the Atlantic."

"Yes, Boss," Matteo nodded respectfully. Two capos hauled the weeping woman to her feet and dragged her out through the broken glass doors into the pouring rain, leaving the clinic lobby quiet once again.

When they were alone, Julian turned back to Elena. Without saying a word, he pulled her fiercely into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck, holding her against his chest so tightly she could feel the violent, racing thunder of his heartbeat.

"I'm sorry," he whispered hoarsely into her auburn hair, his entire frame trembling with the aftershock of what he had almost lost. "I thought... when I saw the camera feed... my God, Elena."

Elena wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, holding him just as fiercely as she had on that freezing riverbank months ago. "You were there, Julian. You protected me. Just like you promised."

She pulled back slightly, looking up into his dark, searching eyes, and gave him a soft, reassuring smile. "Now, help me clean up this broken glass before the morning patients arrive. We have a hospital to run."
