Chapter 2 - A New World

The next morning, Sarah woke up in a bed softer than a cloud, surrounded by silk sheets and sunlight.
Arthur had insisted she stay in the guest wing of the Montgomery mansion so the estate doctors could check her for injuries.
She sat up, looking around the massive room that was easily three times the size of her tiny apartment.
A gentle knock echoed through the room, and the heavy oak door slowly creaked open.
It was Leo, wearing oversized pajamas and holding a small, stuffed bear.
He peeked around the doorframe, his dark eyes wide with hesitation and lingering fear.
"Sarah?" the little boy whispered, his voice still raspy from crying in the dark.
"Come here, sweetheart," Sarah smiled warmly, patting the edge of the enormous mattress.
Leo sprinted across the fluffy carpet and jumped onto the bed, wrapping his tiny arms around her neck.
He refused to let go, clinging to the only person who had heard his desperate cries for help.
Arthur walked into the room a moment later, leaning against the doorframe as he watched the heartwarming scene.
"He hasn't spoken to anyone else since yesterday," Arthur noted, a bittersweet smile playing on his lips.
"He just needs time to realize that the monsters are finally gone," Sarah replied softly, stroking the boy's back.
Arthur walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, handing Sarah a thick, sealed envelope.
"I am setting up a permanent trust in your name, but I have a much bigger favor to ask you," Arthur began.
"Leo needs someone he trusts, someone who genuinely cares for him without hidden agendas."
"I want to hire you as his personal guardian, with a salary that will ensure you never worry about rent again."

Sarah looked at the desperate father and the clinging child, knowing her life had just changed forever.
"I don't care about the money, Mr. Montgomery," Sarah said, holding Leo tighter. "I will stay for him."
