Chapter 7 - The Financial Freeze

By day three at the lake house, Julian’s defense team launched their counterattack through the civil courts.
Arthur Vance filed dozens of motions designed to drain Clara’s financial resources and force her to communicate through mediators.
They cancelled her health insurance cards, froze the credit lines associated with her architectural firm, and sent formal eviction notices for her studio space downtown.
Clara sat at the oak dining table, reading the formal legal notices on Sophie’s monitor without shedding a single tear.
"He thinks I’m still the woman who begged him not to take my phone away," Clara said, tracing her finger over a fraudulent signature on a transfer deed.
"He forgot that I spent five years managing multi-million-dollar construction budgets before he forced me to quit."
Clara opened her encrypted cloud drive, pulling up the hidden folder she had created during her first year of marriage.
"What is that?" Sophie asked, leaning over her sister’s shoulder as hundreds of scanned corporate ledgers appeared on the screen.
"Julian told everyone he was a private wealth consultant," Clara explained, her eyes hard and focused.
"But three nights a week, he would bring home the real books—the unregistered accounts where he hid investments from the tax authorities."
Viktor walked over, wearing his reading glasses, and inspected the names listed on the offshore transfers.
"These aren't just wealthy investors," Viktor noted, pointing a scarred finger at a recurring account name.
"That’s an import-export shell company flagged by federal customs two years ago."
Clara printed fifty pages of the most damning transaction logs and signed her name at the bottom of the witness affidavit.
"He told me that if I ever left him, he would leave me penniless on the street," Clara said, sealing the envelope for Detective Keller.
"Let's see how much his high-priced lawyer charges when the federal fraud division freezes Julian’s operating accounts by noon tomorrow."
Sophie laughed out loud, hitting the send button to transmit the encrypted ledger package directly to the District Attorney's financial crime unit.

"Checkmate, Julian," Sophie muttered.
"You shouldn't have left your laptop open when you were busy polishing your cufflinks."
