Chapter 3 - The Charity Gala Interruption

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was flooded with warm amber light, the clinking of crystal champagne flutes, and the quiet hum of wealthy patrons.
Julian Hartmann stood near the ice sculpture, wearing his tailored tuxedo and flashing his signature, effortless smile at a group of bank directors.
"Charity is about accountability," Julian was telling the vice president of the city council, swirling twenty-year-old scotch in his glass.
"You build a foundation on discipline, structure, and absolute integrity, or the whole enterprise collapses."
The vice president nodded approvingly, mesmerized by Julian's charismatic confidence and refined posture.
No one in the ballroom could see the raw red indentations across his knuckles where the leather strap had bitten into his skin three hours earlier.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open, ignoring the valet staff trying to block the entrance.
Three uniformed police officers and Detective Keller walked across the polished parquet floor, their heavy tactical boots creating a rhythmic, jarring echo.
The conversation around the champagne bar died down instantly as the officers marched straight toward Julian's table.
Julian’s smile didn’t falter immediately; he assumed it was a security detail for the mayor or a misunderstanding regarding a donor.
"Officer, can I help you with something?" Julian asked smoothly, extending a manicured hand toward Detective Keller.
Keller ignored the hand, stepping inside his personal space with a cold, unblinking stare that made several guests step backward.
"Julian Hartmann," Keller said clearly, her voice projecting effortlessly across the silent ballroom.
"You are under arrest for aggravated domestic assault, felony battery of a pregnant dependent, and unlawful endangerment."
Julian’s face tightened, the mask of charming warmth vanishing to reveal the cold, calculating predator beneath.
"This is an absurd mistake," Julian hissed, lowering his voice so the council members wouldn't hear. "My wife is at home resting under medical supervision."
Keller reached out, grabbed his right wrist, and snapped a cold steel cuff around the cufflink-free sleeve of his tuxedo.
"Your wife is safe," Keller replied loud enough for the entire board of directors to hear. "And your private home theater performance was broadcasted directly to our evidence vault."

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed through the ballroom like a gunshot.
Julian was led out past his colleagues, his head held stiffly, but his eyes burning with a venomous rage that promised retaliation.
