Chapter 20 - Rebuilding the Foundation

One year later, the morning sun poured through the fourteen-foot glass windows of the newly opened Black Forest Community Library Wing.

The building was a masterpiece of natural light, warm cedar beams, and open, accessible design—and the bronze plaque near the entrance read: Lead Architect: Clara Adler.

Clara stood by the drafting tables in the children's section, watching fourteen-month-old Leo take his first unsteady steps across the bright wool rug.

He wore a tiny pair of red overalls, laughing loudly as he chased a wooden toy train toward his grandfather’s boots.

Viktor scooped the boy up in one massive arm, tossing him gently into the air until Leo squealed with pure, unburdened delight.

"He’s fast," Viktor said, smiling at his daughter as she rolled up her structural blueprints.

"He gets that from his aunt," Sophie called out from the reception desk, where she was setting up the library’s public internet network.

"He certainly didn't get it from me; I'm still trying to finish the landscape drawings before the mayor arrives."

Detective Keller—now promoted to Chief of the Special Victims Division—walked through the open glass doors carrying a large bouquet of yellow lilies.

"The building looks incredible, Clara," Keller said, placing the flowers on the reception table.

"Not a single dark corner or locked hallway in the entire structure."

Clara looked around the open pavilion, where dozens of families were already reading at the sunlight-drenched tables.

"That was the only requirement," Clara said, smiling as Leo reached out to grab a flower stem.

"I wanted to build a place where nobody ever has to hide."

She walked over to her father, resting her head briefly against his shoulder as the morning bells of the city clock tower began to chime.

The count was over, the scars had faded into ribbons of strength, and her foundation was finally rock solid.
