Chapter 2 - The House on Gravel Drive

The headlights of Viktor's reinforced SUV were switched off as they coasted into the long, tree-lined driveway of the Hartmann estate.
The house stood silent and imposing against the dark evening sky, its large slate roof and manicured hedges looking like a photograph from a luxury architectural magazine.
To the outside world, it was the perfect residence of an affluent, respected financial executive.
To Clara, it was forty square meters of hardwood where she had counted blows to survive.
Detective Keller stepped out of her unmarked sedan first, her hand resting near the holster at her belt as she scanned the perimeter.
"We have forty-five minutes before his driver normally brings him back from downtown," Keller said, checking her glowing watch.
Clara unlocked the heavy oak front door with her brass key, stepping into the foyer where the scent of cedar wood and expensive floor polish still lingered.
"Go straight to the bedroom," Viktor instructed, keeping his body positioned between Clara and the entryway.
"Take only what matters: passports, birth certificates, the family heirlooms, and enough clothes for a cold month."
Clara ascended the floating oak staircase she had designed herself during her first year of marriage.
She walked into the master suite and stared at the brass hook inside the bespoke walnut wardrobe.
The heavy leather training strap hung exactly where Julian had left it, coiled with terrifying, methodical precision.
Keller walked up behind her, wearing latex gloves, and unhooked the strap with a pair of evidence forceps.
"Weapon recovered," Keller noted quietly, dropping the thick leather into a clear, tamper-evident bag.
"DNA swab from the handle will match his knuckles, and the surface blood traces will match yours."
Clara pulled a hard-shell suitcase from the top shelf and began filling it with comfortable sweaters, flat shoes, and the soft cotton baby blankets she had hidden at the back of the linen closet.
She did not touch a single silk dress or diamond necklace Julian had bought her as an apology after a beating.
When she closed the suitcase zipper, she looked at the wide-angle camera mounted high on the bookcase.
The blue LED light blinked once, a silent witness that had finally betrayed its master.

"We are clear," Clara said aloud to the empty room.
This time, she wasn't answering a monster; she was setting herself free.
