Chapter 15 - The Ambush at the Hospital

While Clara rested in the secure maternity suite, a man in a gray service uniform pushed a laundry cart into the hospital’s basement service elevator.

He was not a hospital employee; he was Marcus Vance—the younger brother of Julian’s attorney, hired to obtain a signed custody waiver by any means necessary.

His coat pocket held a notarized document that would grant Julian emergency parental rights if Clara could be coerced into signing under medical distress.

The service elevator dinged open on the third floor, thirty feet down the corridor from Clara’s room.

Marcus stepped out, keeping his head down as he wheeled the cart toward the nurses' station.

"Excuse me," a deep, calm voice called out from the waiting area chairs.

Marcus froze, his hand tightening on the metal handle of the laundry cart as he turned to see Viktor Adler standing ten feet away.

"Linens were delivered at five this morning," Viktor said, his eyes scanning the man’s wrong-sized uniform boots and lack of an ID badge.

"And the hospital laundry staff doesn't wear two-thousand-dollar tactical watches."

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket, but before his fingers could grasp the legal envelope, Viktor closed the distance with terrifying military speed.

The Colonel’s hand clamped around Marcus’s wrist like a steel vice, twisting the arm downward until the man dropped to one knee with a gasp of pain.

"You tell Arthur Vance that if he sends another messenger near my daughter, I won't use the courts," Viktor whispered coldly into Marcus’s ear.

"I will use my old unit."

Detective Keller stepped out of the stairwell with her handcuffs already unclipped, her badge gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

"Interference with a protected witness and attempted criminal trespass," Keller read out calmly as she cuffed Marcus on the floor.

"Tell Julian his visitors list just got permanently reduced to zero."
