Chapter 6 - The Girl Who Remembered

Maya slipped out of the master suite, leaving two trusted guards stationed at Elena's door.

She practically ran through the sprawling, dimly lit corridors of the compound.

She found Mateo in his private study, surrounded by monitors displaying global financial markets.

"Maya, what is wrong?" Mateo asked, instantly dropping his phone and standing up.

She slammed the open sketchbook onto his massive mahogany desk.

Mateo stared at the crude drawing of the scorpion and the scarred face.

His jaw clenched so hard that Maya thought his teeth might actually shatter.

"Elena spoke," Maya said breathlessly.

"She said the man with the scar on his face was the bad man."

Mateo’s eyes darkened into endless pools of pure, murderous rage.

"Victor," Mateo whispered, the name sounding like a death sentence.

"He was the one who pulled my wife from the wreckage, claiming he arrived just too late."

Mateo realized that Victor had sold his family out to the Navarro cartel to stage a coup.

Victor had expected Elena to die from the trauma, taking his treason to the grave.

But Maya had kept the child alive long enough for her memory to surface.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open with a deafening crash.

Victor stood in the doorway, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at Mateo's chest.

"It is a shame the little brat finally learned how to talk," Victor sneered.
