Chapter 5 - The Devil’s Right Hand

That night, Maya sat by the bed while Elena drew in the sketchbook with crayons.

Maya began to hum the familiar lullaby to help the little girl drift off to sleep.

Suddenly, Elena stopped drawing and pointed a tiny finger at the paper.

Maya looked down and felt the blood drain completely from her face.

Elena had drawn a crude but undeniable picture of a black scorpion.

"What is this, sweetie?" Maya asked, keeping her voice as calm as possible.

Elena opened her mouth, her voice cracking from days of absolute silence.

"The bad man," Elena whispered, her whole body shaking.

Maya remembered the rumors she had heard in her East LA neighborhood about the local gangs.

The Navarro cartel, Mateo's deadliest rivals, used the black scorpion as their primary calling card.

But there was something else in the drawing that made Maya's stomach twist into knots.

Elena had drawn the scorpion resting on the wrist of a man with a jagged line on his face.

It was a perfect child's rendering of a facial scar.

Maya realized with horrifying clarity that the ambush had not been a random attack.

The hitmen had known exactly where Mateo’s family would be on that highway.

Victor was the only one who coordinated the family's private security routes.

Maya scooped up the sketchbook, knowing she possessed a deadly piece of information.

She had to find Mateo before the traitor realized the little girl was ready to talk.
