Chapter 2 - The Meaningless Melody

Three hours passed with nothing but the scratching of Maya’s pencil filling the silent room.

The biometric monitor continued its steady, agonizing beep.

Mateo watched from the doorway, his patience wearing dangerously thin.

Doctor Thorne paced nervously in the hall, preparing the intubation equipment.

Maya knew she was running out of time to pull the little girl back from the edge.

She closed her sketchbook and took a slow, deep breath.

Maya began to hum a soft, rhythmic lullaby that her own grandmother used to sing.

It was an obscure, old folk tune from the coastal villages of Mexico, filled with strange, melodic dips.

The lyrics were nonsense words, meant only to mimic the sound of ocean waves rolling against the shore.

As the melody drifted through the heavy air, Elena’s fingers twitched against the silk sheets.

Maya kept her voice gentle, slowly adding the whispered lyrics to the tune.

Elena slowly turned her head, her dark, empty eyes locking onto Maya's face.

The little girl pushed herself up on her trembling elbows, ignoring the IV line pulling at her skin.

Mateo stepped into the room, his breath catching in his throat as he watched his daughter move.

Maya did not stop singing, but she carefully slid a small plastic cup of water across the nightstand.

Elena stared at the cup, then back at Maya, as if asking for permission to live.

Maya nodded once, her voice never wavering from the soothing, rhythmic lullaby.

With a shaking hand, Elena reached out and grasped the cup.

She brought the rim to her chapped lips and took a slow, desperate swallow.

A collective gasp echoed from the medical team waiting in the corridor.

Mateo leaned against the doorframe, closing his eyes as a single tear escaped his ruthless facade.
