Chapter 1 - The Fortress of Glass

Maya stepped out of the tinted luxury SUV and stared up at the sprawling compound.

Armed guards with cold, unblinking eyes watched her every move from the shadows.

She gripped her worn canvas bag tightly, reminding herself of the hundred thousand dollars.

Her brother Leo’s failing kidneys depended entirely on her surviving this impossible job.

Inside, the silence was heavier than the oppressive summer heat hanging over the city.

Eleanor had warned her about the syndicate boss, but no words could prepare Maya for the reality of the man.

Mateo Santos stood outside the primary suite, radiating a lethal, magnetic energy.

His dark eyes locked onto hers, seemingly stripping away all her defenses in a single second.

"You are the final attempt," Mateo said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

"If you fail to make my daughter drink, I will have the doctors intubate her against her will."

Maya swallowed hard, forcing her spine to remain perfectly straight.

"Intubation will only deepen her trauma and break whatever trust she has left," Maya replied.

The armed men flanking the hallway shifted uncomfortably, shocked that anyone dared to contradict the kingpin.

Mateo took a slow step forward, towering over her with an intimidating grace.

"And what exactly makes a nursing student think she knows better than the chief of trauma?" he demanded.

"Because I know what it feels like to want to disappear from a world that hurts too much," Maya answered honestly.

Something flickered in the absolute darkness of Mateo's gaze.

He stepped aside, silently granting her access to the master suite.

Maya walked into the massive room and saw the tiny, frail girl huddled beneath the yellow canopy.

Elena looked like a broken porcelain doll, her hollow eyes staring blankly at the wall.

Maya did not approach the bed with clinical tools or fake, cheerful smiles.

Instead, she sat on the floor near the corner of the room, keeping a respectful distance.

She pulled a small, worn sketchbook from her bag and began to quietly draw.

For the first time in four days, Elena’s gaze flickered slightly toward the new stranger in the room.
