Chapter 8 - The Stairwell Escape

"How many?" Julian didn't flinch. He grabbed the custom triple stroller from the corner of the room, locking the wheels into place with a sharp snap.

"At least a dozen heavy shooters," Reynolds reported, checking the corridor outside. "They’ve jammed our local radio frequencies. We can't reach the local precinct or the dock backup teams."

"We don't need the precinct," Julian said, turning to Clara. His eyes were intense, locking her into his orbit so she wouldn't panic. "Clara. Put Lily and Maya in the stroller. Harness them tight. Hold Leo against your chest. Do not let go of him, no matter what you hear."

"I won't," she whispered, her hands shaking as she strapped the girls into the padded seats. Her maternal instinct had completely overridden her terror; she moved with a fast, desperate precision that earned a brief nod of approval from Reynolds.

"We take the emergency freight stairwell in the core," Julian instructed his four remaining guards. "Reynolds, you take the point. Miller and Vance cover the rear. If anyone on those stairs isn't wearing our colors, you don't ask questions. You put them down."

They moved out of the nursery into the dim, red-lit corridor of the fiftieth floor. The building's automated alarms had been cut by the intruders, leaving the skyscraper eerily silent except for the heavy thud of tactical boots on carpet.

Julian pushed the stroller with one hand, his right hand gripping his sidearm, staying entirely between Clara and the open hallway.

They reached the reinforced steel door of the central stairwell. Reynolds pushed it open, his rifle raised, scanning the dark concrete descent. "Clear," he muttered.

They began the long, agonizing descent down fifty flights of stairs. The echoing clatter of their footsteps felt impossibly loud. In Clara’s arms, Leo buried his face into her neck, sensing the absolute tension radiating from the adults around him, while the girls in the stroller remained remarkably quiet, staring up at their father’s back.

They were passing the twenty-second floor when the gunfire started.

It came from below—a sharp, deafening burst of automatic fire that echoed up the concrete shaft like thunder.

"Contact below!" Miller shouted from the rear, spinning around as the stairwell door two flights down was kicked open by three men in tactical masks.

"Move! Down the eighteenth floor corridor!" Julian roared, shoving the stroller forward while firing three rapid, deafening shots over Clara’s shoulder down the stairwell.

A cry of pain echoed from below as one of Volkov’s men dropped. Clara screamed, covering Leo’s ears as Julian grabbed her arm, hauling her through the heavy fire door onto the eighteenth floor—a vast, unfinished floor of bare concrete columns and exposed wiring.

"They've flanked us," Reynolds said, slamming the fire door shut and driving a steel wedge under the frame to delay pursuit. "We’re trapped between the stairwells, Boss."
