Chapter 4 - The Lie Unraveled

The penthouse conference room was vast, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gray skyline. At the far end of the mahogany table sat Dr. Richard Thorne—a man with silver hair, a bespoke suit, and the polished, arrogant posture of a physician who catered exclusively to the ultra-wealthy.

He stood up smiling as the doors opened. "Julian, good to see you. I have the new pediatric proposals ready for—"

His voice died in his throat as Julian stepped aside, revealing Clara standing in the doorway.

Thorne’s face didn't just pale; it turned the color of curdled milk. His hand twitched toward his briefcase, knocking a silver pen onto the polished wood. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why is this woman here?"

"You recognize her, Richard?" Julian walked toward the table, his footsteps making no sound on the plush carpet.

"Of course not," Thorne stammered, adjusting his tie with shaking fingers. "She looks like a common... I don't know who she is. Julian, if this is regarding the clinic's NDAs—"

"Her name is Clara Vance," Julian said quietly. "Though when you knew her, her surname was Miller. You performed an emergency C-section on her fifteen months ago on the third floor of Mercy General."

"I perform hundreds of procedures," Thorne said, backing away from the table as Julian advanced. "I cannot be expected to remember every surrogate who passes through our doors!"

Clara stepped forward, her fear evaporating, replaced by a volcanic, blinding rage. She walked right up to the physician, her chest heaving. "You told me they were dead," she screamed, her voice vibrating off the glass walls. "You held my hand while I was still numb from the epidural and told me my little girl and my two boys didn't survive the night! You made me sign disposal forms!"

"Because you waived your rights!" Thorne shouted back, his veneer of professional calm disintegrating. "You signed a blind surrogacy contract, Miss Miller! The Vance family paid two million dollars for healthy biological heirs! When Mrs. Vance’s own surrogate miscarried in the second trimester, the institute faced a catastrophic breach of contract. We substituted the embryos! Your eggs, Vance’s sperm!"

The room went dead silent.

Julian stopped three feet from Thorne. "What did you just say?"

May you like

"It was standard genetic matching!" Thorne babbled, sweat pouring down his forehead. "Sarah Vance’s ova were non-viable! We used Miss Miller’s donor profile because her physical markers matched your wife's! You got your heirs, Julian! Healthy, beautiful triplets! Why does it matter what we told the incubator to keep her quiet?!"

The sound of Julian’s fist connecting with Thorne’s jaw was like a gunshot.
