Chapter 14 - Return to Vanguard

At midnight, a convoy of three unmarked, matte-black utility vehicles cut their headlights and glided into the dark service alley behind the Vanguard Institute. The surrounding upscale North Side street was dead quiet, but the air around the clinic smelled faintly of ozone and impending violence.
Clara sat in the back of the lead SUV, wearing a lightweight Kevlar vest over her dark sweater, her heart pounding a steady, rhythmic drumbeat against her ribs. Julian sat beside her, checking the night-vision optics on his short-barreled carbine.
"The main lobby is already compromised," Miller whispered from the front seat, checking a thermal scanner. "We have eight heat signatures moving through the ground floor reception area. Volkov’s men are setting charges on the primary server banks."
"We don't care about the ground floor servers," Julian said quietly, touching his earpiece. "We want the sub-basement cold storage vault. Clara, talk us through the secondary access."
Clara closed her eyes, visualizing the sterile, terrifying building where her life had been stolen two years ago. "There’s a laundry chute in the rear maintenance bay. It drops directly into the sub-basement sorting room, thirty feet from the cold storage vault. It bypasses the ground floor security gates entirely."
"You heard the lady," Julian said, cycling his weapon's bolt. "Reynolds, take Team Beta and initiate a diversionary breach at the front entrance. Draw their heavy shooters into the lobby. Team Alpha comes with me and my wife down the chute."
They slipped out of the vehicles into the freezing night air. Moving in a tight, silent diamond formation with Clara in the center, Julian’s team breached the rear maintenance door using a hydraulic silent-spread tool that popped the lock without a sound.
The maintenance bay was dark, smelling of industrial laundry detergent and damp brick. Clara led them directly to a heavy metal panel set into the wall—the industrial linen chute.
"It’s a twenty-foot drop onto canvas laundry carts," Clara whispered, pulling the latch open.
Julian went first, swinging his legs into the darkness and dropping silently into the shaft. Two seconds later, his voice crackled through her earpiece: Clear. Drop.
Clara didn't hesitate. She slid into the chute, the smooth metal rushing past her before she landed heavily on a mound of hospital linens below. Julian’s strong arms were waiting, catching her instantly and lifting her to her feet in the dark, subterranean basement.
"Good girl," he murmured against her ear, his breath warm in the freezing cellar.
They moved down the narrow concrete hallway toward the heavy steel doors of the records vault. But as they rounded the final corner, the beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the gloom, settling directly on Clara’s chest.

"Well, well," a heavy, rasping voice echoed down the corridor. "I told Thorne the little incubator would come back to the nest eventually."
Standing in front of the vault doors, surrounded by six heavily armed Russian mercenaries, was Victor Volkov.
