Chapter 20 - An Unbreakable Family

One year later.
The autumn sun hung low over the Atlantic, painting the sky above the Vance coastal estate in brilliant shades of crushed violet, burnt orange, and gold. A cool, salted sea breeze blew across the expansive manicured lawn, rustling the leaves of the ancient oak trees lining the cliffside terrace.
It was the triplets' third birthday party.
There were no media cameras, no calculating socialites, and no underworld associates allowed on the grounds. The guests gathered on the lawn were real friends: Clara’s colleagues from the foundation, several of the reunited mothers and their children, and the loyal estate staff who had become an extended family over the past two years.
In the center of the lawn, a massive wooden play structure had been erected, echoing with the chaotic, joyful shouting of a dozen children playing tag.
Clara sat on a plush outdoor sofa on the terrace, wearing a gorgeous cream-colored knit dress that hugged the gentle, visible curve of her stomach—six months pregnant with their fourth child, a baby girl due in the dead of winter. She held a glass of sparkling cider, laughing as she watched Leo, now a sturdy, fearless three-year-old, attempt to teach a younger toddler how to kick a miniature soccer ball across the grass.
A heavy, familiar warmth settled against her side as Julian sat down on the sofa next to her. He had shed his suit jacket and tie hours ago, the sleeves of his crisp white shirt rolled up to his elbows as he handed Clara a fresh plate of strawberry shortcake from the catering tables.
"You need to eat," Julian said, his hand dropping instinctively to rest gently over the swell of her stomach, his thumb stroking the fabric with a protective tenderness that never failed to make her heart flutter. "The doctor said you were slightly underweight at the last checkup."
"The doctor said I was perfectly healthy, and you are an overprotective tyrant," Clara laughed, leaning her head against his broad shoulder as she took a bite of the cake. "Though I won't say no to strawberries."
Julian smiled, his amber eyes scanning the lawn until they settled on Lily and Maya, who were sitting under an oak tree with their knitted rabbits, happily sharing a bowl of berries with one of the estate's security dogs—a massive, gentle German Shepherd that followed the girls everywhere they went.
"We built a good fortress, Clara," Julian murmured softly, his arm tightening around her waist as the sun dipped toward the horizon, casting long, peaceful shadows across the grass.

Clara looked out over the lawn, at the children running freely in the light, completely safe, completely loved, and entirely devoid of the shadows that had once threatened to consume them. She placed her hand over Julian’s where it rested against their unborn child, intertwining their fingers securely.
"It isn't a fortress anymore, Julian," Clara said, her voice rich with an absolute, eternal peace as she looked up into the eyes of the man who had dropped to his knees for her in a crowded café two years ago. "It’s just our home."
