Chapter 13 - The Trap is Set

With the marriage certificate formally registered by the judge and uploaded to the state database under seal, Julian’s legal team launched a counter-offensive that paralyzed Volkov’s attorneys within hours. But Julian knew that court injunctions wouldn't stop a syndicate boss who was facing total financial ruin.

That evening, Julian convened a tactical briefing in the estate's basement command center—a room lined with digital maps, surveillance feeds, and encrypted communication servers. Clara sat at the head of the table beside him, refusing to stay upstairs in the nursery. If her children's lives were being fought over, she was going to see the battlefield.

"Volkov is desperate," Reynolds explained, pointing to a satellite map of the city’s industrial district. "Our dock workers just blockaded his three primary shipping vessels in the harbor. He’s losing six million dollars a day in perishable cargo. He knows he can't breach this compound directly—our perimeter is too tight."

"So what does he do?" Clara asked, leaning forward.

"He tries to draw me out," Julian said, his eyes fixed on a specific coordinate on the map: The Vanguard Institute. "Dr. Thorne is currently being held in a federal safe house downtown after our attorneys handed his billing ledgers over to the FBI this morning. But the physical evidence—the original genetic donor logs and the tissue samples proving Volkov’s ownership of the trafficking network—are still inside the institute's basement vault."

Julian looked at Reynolds. "Volkov is going to hit the clinic tonight to destroy those records before the federal investigators execute their search warrant at dawn. If those files burn, Volkov escapes the human trafficking indictments."

"We let the FBI handle it," Clara said immediately, grabbing Julian’s arm. "You don't have to go back there. Let the police arrest him!"

"The police have been on Volkov’s payroll for a decade, Clara," Julian said gently, placing his hand over hers. "If I don't go to that clinic tonight, those files disappear, Thorne gets suicided in his cell by a dirty guard, and Volkov spends the next ten years hunting our children from a non-extradition country in Eastern Europe."

His jaw hardened into granite. "This ends tonight. On my terms."

"Then I’m going with you," Clara said, standing up.

"Absolutely not," Julian barked, his calm evaporating instantly. "You stay here with the children. That is an active tactical zone—"

"I know the layout of that clinic better than your strike team does!" Clara fired back, her voice ringing with an authority that stunned the surrounding guards. "I spent six weeks undergoing fertility cycles in that building! I know where the backup service elevators are! I know which basement ducts lead to the records vault because I had to clean them when I worked janitorial shifts there five years ago to pay my father's medical bills!"

She leaned across the table, her amber eyes blazing. "You need to get into that vault before Volkov’s men set the incendiaries. You take me, or your men spend twenty minutes trying to breach reinforced steel doors while the evidence turns to ash. I am your wife, Julian. Don't leave me behind."

Julian stared at her for a long, tense moment. The silence in the command center was absolute. Finally, a slow, dark smirk touched the corner of his lips.

"Reynolds," Julian said without looking away from his wife. "Get Mrs. Vance a tactical vest that fits."
