Chapter 17 - The Dawn Raid

By 4:00 AM, the Vanguard Institute was surrounded by a sea of flashing red and blue lights, but they didn't belong to the local precinct. Dozens of black federal command vehicles bearing the insignia of the FBI’s Human Trafficking and Public Integrity Task Force had cordoned off the entire four-block radius.

Julian had orchestrated the entire endgame before they even stepped onto the helicopter that afternoon. While his strike team eliminated Volkov’s armed mercenaries inside the basement, Julian’s legal counsel had delivered the decrypted server data directly to the United States Attorney General’s personal residence.

Clara sat on the open tailgate of an armored medical ambulance, a warm woolen blanket draped over her shoulders while a federal paramedic treated a minor cut on her palm. She watched as federal agents led Dr. Richard Thorne out of the building in handcuffs, his tailored suit ruined, his head bowed in absolute disgrace as news cameras recorded his perp walk.

Special Agent Vance—no relation, though the irony wasn't lost on anyone—a sharp-eyed woman in a tactical suit, walked over to the ambulance holding a thick, sealed evidentiary binder retrieved from the basement vault.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," the agent said, nodding respectfully to Julian, who stood leaning against the ambulance with one hand resting protectively on Clara’s shoulder. "We’ve secured the primary server racks and the biological vaults. The evidence against Thorne, the clinic administrators, and the remaining lieutenants of the Volkov syndicate is air-tight. We have records of over forty illegal adoptions and embryo thefts dating back six years."

"What happens to the other children?" Clara asked softly, looking up from her blanket. "The other mothers?"

"We have a dedicated victim services unit establishing contact with every biological parent listed in the ledger starting this morning," Agent Vance said softly. "Because of your willingness to secure that vault, Mrs. Vance, dozens of families are going to get the truth today."

The agent handed a certified, stamped document to Julian. "The Attorney General signed off on this ten minutes ago. It’s an immediate, permanent federal seal on your children’s birth certificates. The state registry has been corrected. Clara Vance is legally and permanently recorded as the biological and maternal parent of Leo, Lily, and Maya Vance. No agency, no relative, and no court will ever have the standing to question it again."

Julian took the document, his eyes scanning the official government seal before he handed it down to Clara.

She looked at the paper. In crisp, black administrative ink, under the heading MOTHER OF RECORD, read three simple words that healed fifteen months of agonizing, hollow torment: Clara Vance (Biological).

She pressed the document against her chest, closing her eyes as the first bright rays of the morning sun began to break over the eastern skyline, washing the dark city in warm, golden light.

"Let's go home," Julian said quietly, extending his hand to her. "Our children are going to wake up soon, and they're going to want their mother."
