Chapter 9 - The Rightful Heir

A month after the trial concluded, David and I sat in a sleek, glass-walled conference room in downtown Manhattan.

Across from us sat the senior partners of my late grandfather's law firm.

They slid a massive stack of legal documents across the mahogany table.

"Mrs. Vance," the lead attorney began, adjusting his glasses.

"With the conviction of your parents, the state has formally recognized Maya as the sole, rightful heir to the eighty-million-dollar estate."

"Furthermore, because Richard’s parental rights have been permanently terminated, David is legally cleared to formally adopt Maya as his own daughter."

David squeezed my hand under the table, a massive smile breaking across his face.

We signed the papers without hesitation.

We took control of the trust, but we had no intention of living the toxic, miserable lifestyle my parents had worshipped.

We immediately sold the sprawling, cursed estate in the suburbs.

We used a portion of the funds to buy a beautiful, warm house in a quiet neighborhood near the beach, far away from the toxic elite circles.

We set up a massive college fund for Maya, ensuring she would never have to rely on anyone else for her future.

But the best thing we did with the money was completely anonymous.

We established a heavily funded charity in Maya's name that provided emergency housing and legal defense for young, single teenage mothers.

We made sure that girls who found themselves terrified and alone, just like I had been at eighteen, would have a safe place to go.

My parents had tried to use the money to destroy my life.

I was going to use it to rebuild thousands of others.
