Chapter 4 - The Tragic Motive

I could barely breathe as the horrific reality of my entire life fractured into a million jagged pieces.

My own parents had watched me struggle as a terrified teenage single mother.

They had watched me cry, wondering what had happened to me that night.

And they had smiled, attended Chloe's lavish wedding to the man who assaulted me, and buried the truth in a steel box.

"Why kill her now?" David asked the detective, his voice terrifyingly calm and lethal.

"If they kept it a secret for five years, why drug a child and throw her in a dumpster this morning?"

"That is where the trust document comes into play," Detective Miller replied.

"We found a copy of your late grandfather's will inside the safe."

My grandfather.

He was a massive real estate tycoon who despised my parents' shallow, greedy lifestyle.

He had passed away three years ago, leaving his entire empire tied up in complex legal trusts.

"Your grandfather's will had a very specific, ironclad stipulation," Miller explained.

"The entirety of his eighty-million-dollar estate was to be transferred to his firstborn biological great-grandchild."

"But the money only unlocks on that child's fifth birthday."

Everything suddenly made terrifying, sickening sense.

Maya was the firstborn great-grandchild.

Today was her fifth birthday.

"If Maya is alive today, she inherits the entire eighty million dollars," the detective continued.

"By law, you would become the sole executor of her estate until she turns eighteen."

"Your parents and Chloe would get absolutely nothing."

"But if Maya died before her fifth birthday was officially over..."

"Then Chloe's daughter, Sophie, becomes the new heir," David finished, finishing the gruesome puzzle.

"That is why they threw Sophie a fake surprise birthday party today."

"They were going to claim Maya tragically suffocated in the garbage, play the grieving family, and instantly pivot the inheritance to Sophie."

My mother's obsession with family image was never about reputation.

It was about eighty million dollars of blood money.

"Where are they right now?" I asked, wiping the tears from my face.

"My officers are currently securing the estate and placing all four of them in handcuffs," Miller said.

"Your father is threatening to sue the department, and your mother is having a complete meltdown in front of her country club friends."

"Good," I whispered, staring down at my sleeping, beautiful daughter.

"Make sure they are humiliated before you lock them in a cell."
