The trial was the biggest media circus the state had ever seen.
The wealthy elite of the city watched in horror as their esteemed country club friends were exposed as greedy, murderous monsters.
I sat in the front row of the courtroom every single day, holding David's hand, staring directly at the people who had tortured me.
They looked pathetic in their orange prison jumpsuits.
My father had lost twenty pounds.
My mother's gray roots had grown out, stripping away her illusion of youth and perfection.
Chloe refused to look at me, staring at the wooden table in front of her.
Richard looked completely defeated, knowing he was facing decades in prison for his past crimes and his current ones.
The jury only deliberated for exactly two hours.
When the judge asked the foreman for the verdict, the courtroom fell deadly silent.
"Guilty on all counts," the foreman read aloud.
My mother collapsed into her chair, sobbing loudly.
My father buried his face in his shackled hands.
The judge slammed his gavel down, his face a mask of absolute judicial fury.
"In my thirty years on the bench, I have never seen a family so utterly devoid of morality, empathy, or basic human decency," the judge declared.
"You discarded a beautiful child like garbage to secure a financial payout."
He sentenced Richard to forty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, ensuring he would never harm another woman or child again.
Chloe received thirty-five years for her direct role in poisoning Maya.
My mother and father both received twenty-five years for conspiracy, fraud, and attempted murder.
They would all die behind bars.
As the bailiffs dragged them out of the courtroom, my mother turned to look at me one last time.
She opened her mouth, perhaps to beg for forgiveness, or perhaps to spit one last insult.
But I didn't let her speak.
