Chapter 3 - The Broken Safe

While the detectives raced back to the estate, David and I refused to leave the hospital.

We sat by Maya’s bedside in the pediatric intensive care unit, surrounded by the rhythmic beeping of life support machines.

She looked so incredibly tiny surrounded by all those plastic tubes and wires.

I stroked her soft, blonde hair, promising her that the monsters who did this would never touch her again.

Around noon, David’s phone rang.

It was Detective Miller, the officer leading the search at my parents' house.

David put the phone on speaker so I could hear.

"We have a major situation at the estate," Detective Miller announced, his voice tight with adrenaline.

"When we arrived with the warrant, your family was in the middle of hosting a massive catered brunch."

"Your mother actually tried to bribe my officers to come back tomorrow."

I scoffed, shaking my head at her delusional arrogance.

"Did you arrest her?" I asked, my voice filled with venom.

"Not yet, but we found something much bigger than the pill bottles," the detective replied.

"While searching your father's private study, we discovered a hidden wall safe behind a bookshelf."

"Your father refused to provide the combination, so we had a technician drill it open."

My heart hammered against my ribs.

My father was a paranoid, controlling man who kept his business secrets guarded with his life.

"What was inside the safe?" David asked, leaning closer to the phone.

"Medical files, birth certificates, and a sealed legal trust document," Miller explained.

"But the documents don't just involve your parents."

"They involve your sister Chloe's husband, Richard."

I froze.

Richard was Chloe’s wealthy, handsome, supposedly perfect husband who worked in investment banking.

He was the golden son-in-law my parents always wished they had, the total opposite of my chaotic teenage pregnancy.

"What does Richard have to do with this?" I asked, a sense of dread pooling in my stomach.

"Ma'am, we found a clandestine DNA report inside the safe, dated five years ago," the detective said softly.

"It confirms that Richard is Maya's biological father."

The room started to spin.

The walls of the hospital felt like they were collapsing inward, crushing the breath out of my lungs.

"That's impossible," I gasped, gripping the edge of Maya’s bed.

"I don't even know Richard like that!"

"I got pregnant at a high school party when I was eighteen, and I was blackout drunk."

"I never knew who the father was."

David wrapped his arms around me as I began to hyperventilate.

"Richard was at that same party," Detective Miller said, connecting the horrific dots.

"He was twenty-four at the time, dating your sister Chloe."

"The files indicate your parents found out the truth during your pregnancy."

"They paid a private doctor to run a secret DNA test, confirmed Richard assaulted you, and chose to cover it up to protect Chloe's engagement to a millionaire."

I screamed.

It was a guttural, agonizing scream born from five years of lies, manipulation, and trauma.

They didn't just hate Maya because she was an inconvenience.

They hated Maya because her very existence was walking, breathing proof of Richard's monstrous crime.
