Chapter 7 - The Awakening

Three days later, the sterile silence of the hospital room was finally broken.
I was resting my head on David's shoulder when the pediatric nurse gently tapped my arm.
"She's moving," the nurse whispered.
I shot out of my chair, rushing to the side of the hospital bed.
Maya's small chest fluttered, and she let out a tiny, groggy groan.
Slowly, her beautiful green eyes fluttered open, blinking against the harsh hospital lights.
"Mommy?" Maya croaked, her throat dry and raspy.
I burst into tears, wrapping my arms around her small body, burying my face in her neck.
"I'm here, baby," I sobbed, kissing her forehead a thousand times.
"Mommy is right here, and you are completely safe."
David leaned over, tears streaming down his face, and kissed her little hand.
"Did I sleep past my birthday?" Maya asked, looking confused at the tubes attached to her arm.
I let out a wet, genuine laugh for the first time in days.
"No, sweetie," I promised her.
"We are going to have the biggest, best birthday party in the world as soon as you feel better."
Later that afternoon, a child psychologist and a gentle female detective came into the room to speak with Maya.
They needed her statement for the criminal trial, but they proceeded with extreme caution.
"Maya, do you remember what happened before you went to sleep?" the detective asked softly.
Maya nodded, clutching her stuffed bear tightly.
"Auntie Chloe came into my room and said she had a special magic potion for my birthday," Maya explained in her innocent, clear voice.
"She said it tasted yucky, but if I drank it all, I would wake up with a huge surprise."
"Then Grandma came in and told me to be a good girl and drink it fast."
The detective wrote down every word, her jaw tightening with suppressed anger.
"Did you feel sick after you drank it?" the detective asked.
"I felt really dizzy," Maya said, rubbing her eyes.
"And then Uncle Richard carried me downstairs in a big black bag."
"I tried to ask him where we were going, but I couldn't open my mouth."
That testimony was the absolute end of the line for my family.

It proved all four of them were actively involved in the attempted murder.
The truth was finally out in the open, and it was entirely undeniable.
