Chapter 7 - The Awakening

Three days later, the call came.

Alexander was sitting in his office, rebuilding the company structure after purging Julian's loyalists, when the hospital rang.

"Mr. Reed," the doctor said, a smile evident in his voice. "She's awake."

Alexander dropped his phone. He didn't wait for his driver. He grabbed his keys, jumped into his sports car, and broke every speed limit in the city to get to the hospital.

When he pushed open the door to the ICU room, the breathing tube was gone. Evelyn was pale, her head wrapped in bandages, but her eyes were open.

"Mom," Alexander choked out, falling to his knees beside her bed. He took her frail hand, pressing it to his forehead as tears finally broke through his iron facade. "I'm so sorry. I am so, so sorry."

Evelyn smiled weakly, her fingers gently stroking his hair. "Oh, my sweet boy," she whispered, her voice raspy. "You're here."

"I'm here. I'm never leaving you again. She’s gone, Mom. Victoria is gone. She can never hurt you again."

Evelyn closed her eyes, a tear escaping down her wrinkled cheek. "I didn't care about the house, Alex. I just missed my son."
