Chapter 2
CHAPTER 2 — The Truth About Alexander Reed
Evelyn woke up in a private hospital room that smelled of antiseptic and fresh flowers.
Alexander sat beside her bed, awake despite the dark circles under his eyes.
“You stayed,” she said softly.
“Always,” he replied.
He hesitated, then spoke the truth he had buried for years.
“After Dad died… I was angry. I blamed you for being weak. For letting people walk over you.”
Evelyn turned her face away.
“I thought becoming powerful would protect us both,” Alexander continued. “But somewhere along the way, I became just like the people who hurt you.”
Silence stretched between them.
“Victoria reminded me of my ambition,” he said bitterly. “Ruthless. Polished. Empty.”
Evelyn reached for his hand.
“You are not her,” she said. “And you are not your father.”
Alexander’s eyes filled.
“I let her humiliate you,” he whispered. “I let her call you a nobody.”
Evelyn squeezed his fingers.
“I raised you to be kind,” she said. “It’s never too late to remember that.”
The next morning, the mansion gates opened to chaos.
News headlines exploded:
BILLIONAIRE’S FIANCÉE EXPOSED IN ATTEMPTED MURDER
Sponsors pulled out.
Board members demanded explanations.
Alexander stood before the media, unflinching.
“My mother is the reason I exist,” he said. “Anyone who disrespects her has no place in my life or my company.”
Inside a holding cell, Victoria watched the press conference on a cracked TV.
Her perfect world collapsed in real time.
She screamed.
But no one listened.
Back at the mansion, Alexander made a decision.
“This house feels cursed,” he told Evelyn. “Too many memories of silence.”
“So what will you do?” she asked.
He smiled faintly.
“We’ll rebuild it.”
