Chapter 9 - The Viper in the Nest

Before Julian could initiate a lockdown of the global servers, the heavy satellite phone resting on the corner of the desk buzzed, vibrating violently against the mahogany wood. The caller ID displayed a single, encrypted string of numbers.
Julian stared at the screen for three seconds before pressing the speakerphone button.
“I see you made it to the hunting lodge, brother,” Damian’s voice echoed through the quiet library. It was smooth, aristocratic, and dripping with arrogant confidence. “And I assume your clever little accountant has finally pieced together my digital breadcrumbs by now.”
Julian didn’t blink. “You sold out the family registry to the Chicago syndicate, Damian. You signed the death warrants of everyone who has stood by our house for decades.”
“I evolved our business model, Julian,” Damian sneered through the crackling satellite connection. “You are obsessed with loyalty, honor, and protecting old ghosts. The Chicago syndicate offered me three billion dollars and undisputed control of the eastern seaboard ports in exchange for that registry. It was simple economics.”
“You tried to kill the woman under my protection,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a register so menacing that Clara felt a shiver trace its way down her spine. “For that alone, there won’t be a hole on this earth deep enough to hide you.”
Damian let out a dry, mocking laugh that sent chills through the firelit room.
“Always the romantic warrior, Julian. But you’re too late. I already initiated the final decryption sequence for the registry ten minutes ago from my mobile command unit. By midnight tonight, the Chicago syndicate gets their list, the Feds get the fabricated evidence framing you for treason, and I step in as the grieving, law-abiding brother who takes over Thorne Global.”
“You don’t have the master encryption keys, Damian,” Clara spoke up, leaning toward the microphone, her voice steady and defiant. “You only have the shell files. If you try to force the decryption without the physical drive Mr. Thorne holds, the algorithm will permanently corrupt the entire database.”
There was a long, tense pause on the other end of the line.
“Ah, Miss Vance,” Damian said, his tone turning venomous and sharp. “I underestimated you once when I thought you were just a desperate girl trying to pay off hospital bills. I won’t make that mistake again.”
Before anyone could reply, the connection went dead with a sharp click.

Julian grabbed the satellite phone and hurled it across the room, shattering the expensive device against the stone fireplace. He turned to Clara, his chest heaving, his blue eyes burning with a desperate, fierce resolve.
“Pack your things,” Julian commanded, reaching for his tactical gun belt resting on the side table. “We’re going back to the city. We have six hours to hunt my brother down before he trades three generations of blood for a seat at the Chicago table.”
