Chapter 20 - The Queen of Thorne Global

Clara stood in the center of the forty-fifth-floor executive suite, staring at the manila envelope in Julian’s hand.

Everything she had ever fought for, everything she had suffered through four weeks of freezing sleet, sleepless nights, and terrifying shootouts to achieve, was resting right there in his palm. Safety. Security. An easy, quiet life far away from the dangerous, high-stakes world of the Thorne syndicate.

She looked up from the envelope to Julian’s face.

She saw the raw honesty in his blue eyes. She saw the quiet resignation of a man who genuinely believed he was a monster, a man who loved her so profoundly and selflessly that he was willing to break his own heart all over again just to give her the peaceful life he thought she deserved.

A slow, brilliant smile spread across Clara’s face.

She reached out, took the thick manila envelope from his hand, and walked over to the massive stone fireplace built into the executive wall.

Without hesitation, she tossed the envelope directly into the dancing flames.

Julian’s eyes widened in shock as the ten-million-dollar check and the property deeds caught fire, curling and blackening in the heat. “Clara! What are you doing? That’s your entire future!”

“No, it isn’t,” she said, turning around to face him, her dark eyes flashing with fierce, unbreakable determination. “That was the price you were willing to pay to get rid of me, Mr. Thorne. And I told you once before—I don’t scare easily.”

She closed the distance between them in three slow, deliberate strides, stopping inches away from his broad chest.

“I didn’t stand between you and a loaded gun on a freezing Brooklyn dock just to become some retired accountant living on a beach in Florida,” Clara whispered, reaching up to frame his sharp, scarred jaw with both of her warm hands. “You told me you needed an auditor sharp enough to hunt down the ghosts in your ledgers. Well, your empire is always going to have ghosts, Julian. And you are always going to need someone you can trust with your life to watch your back.”

Julian stared down at her, his chest rising and falling rapidly as the crushing weight of his loneliness finally shattered completely beneath the sheer, magnificent force of her devotion.

“You’re choosing this?” he asked, his voice trembling with a raw, overwhelming emotion that made his powerful frame shudder. “You’re choosing me? With all my scars, all my enemies, all my shadows?”

“I chose you the night you shielded me from the glass in the penthouse,” Clara said fiercely, rising up on her tiptoes. “You are my partner, Julian Thorne. You are my king. And I am never walking out of your building alone again.”

With a low, breathless groan of pure, unadulterated surrender, Julian wrapped his massive arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet and crushing her against his chest as he brought his lips down onto hers.

The kiss was fierce, consuming, and overflowing with all the passion, gratitude, and fierce protective love they had fought through hell to earn. It was a promise sealed not in contracts or ledgers, but in blood, trust, and absolute devotion.

Outside the towering glass windows, the sun shone brilliantly over the city of Manhattan. The winter storms were gone forever, melted away by the dawn of a new reign.

Julian Thorne had ruled the shadows of New York alone for twenty years. But as he held Clara Vance tightly in his arms, looking out over the empire they had saved together, he knew he would never rule in the dark again.

The King had finally found his Queen. And together, they were completely untouchable.
