Chapter 6 - The Long Drive North

The emergency evacuation chute dropped them three floors down into a hidden, armored transit tunnel that connected the commercial tower to an adjacent subway maintenance shaft.
With Marcus providing covering fire from the upper levels, Julian led Clara through the damp, freezing darkness of the underground tunnels until they reached a secondary extraction vehicle—a matte-black, untraceable utility truck equipped with heavy off-road tires and military-grade plating.
They drove north into the teeth of the storm, leaving the chaos of Manhattan behind them. The sleet had turned into a blinding, heavy snowstorm by the time they crossed the state line, burying the highways under deep, treacherous drifts.
Clara sat in the passenger seat, the heater blasting warm air over her numb extremities. She watched Julian as he drove, his hands steady on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, his eyes scanning the dark, snow-covered pine forests flanking the empty interstate.
He hadn’t spoken a word since they escaped the tunnels, his mind clearly consumed by the tactical disaster unfolding inside his empire.
“Who has the security clearance to override your private elevator?” Clara asked quietly, breaking the heavy silence filling the truck’s cab.
Julian’s jaw tightened, his grip on the steering wheel shifting slightly. “Less than five people in the entire world.”
“One of them is the mole,” she said, her analytical mind piecing together the timeline of the assault. “They knew exactly where your safehouse was. They knew the override codes. They timed the hit the moment I was brought into the building.”
“Yes,” Julian said, his voice hard and flat. “Which means the betrayal isn’t coming from a mid-level executive or a rival syndicate family. It’s coming from inside my own house.”
He glanced over at her, his expression softening slightly as he took in her exhausted, battered appearance. The dark circles beneath her eyes were more pronounced now, her pale skin contrasting sharply with the heavy tactical gear she was wearing.
“We are heading to my family’s hunting lodge in the Adirondacks,” Julian said, reaching across the console to rest his warm hand over hers. “It’s off the grid. No digital signatures, no satellite tracking. Marcus is meeting us there with your brother’s medical team.”
Clara looked down at his large, scarred hand covering hers. For the first time since she had walked into his office four weeks ago, she didn't feel like an employee or a pawn in a corporate chess game.
She felt like a partner.

“We need to set a trap,” Clara said, turning her palm upward to interlock her fingers with his. “Whoever is doing this thinks I’m just an accountant who stumbled onto their scheme by accident. They don’t know I already memorized the routing architecture.”
A slow, predatory smile spread across Julian’s face in the dim glow of the dashboard lights. “What do you have in mind, Miss Vance?”
