Chapter 17 - Ashes and Ice

Julian looked at Clara, his breath catching in his throat at the sight of her standing there in the freezing sleet, holding a gun to protect him.
“I told you to stay with Marcus,” Julian said quietly, though his voice was thick with an unmistakable, overwhelming pride.
“You told me I was fired four weeks ago, too,” Clara replied without taking her eyes off Damian. “I didn’t listen then either, Mr. Thorne.”
Damian let out a bitter, blood-chilling laugh from his knees on the icy wood. He looked between Julian and Clara, his eyes filled with venomous defeat.
“You’re pathetic, Julian,” Damian spat out, wiping blood from his mouth. “You think you’ve won? The logic bomb might have stopped the file transfer, but the Feds are already surrounding the perimeter! When they breach this dock, they’re going to arrest everyone wearing a Thorne suit! You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a federal supermax prison!”
“Actually, Damian,” Clara said calmly, stepping forward onto the dock, her voice ringing clear above the sound of the churning river, “I didn’t just program that logic bomb to contact the FBI. While I was setting up the routing architecture at the hunting lodge, I added a secondary broadcast layer.”
Damian narrowed his eyes. “What are you talking about?”
“The FBI financial crimes division didn’t just receive your GPS coordinates,” Clara explained, a brilliant, analytical smirk touching the corner of her lips. “They received a complete, unredacted data dump of every illegal transaction you personally authorized from your executive terminal over the last five years. Every bribe, every extortion payoff, every hit order—all cryptographically signed by your personal biometric security key.”
Julian turned his head to look at her, a look of profound, stunned realization washing over his handsome face. “You isolated his digital footprint from the company servers.”
“I’m an auditor, Julian,” she said simply, lowering the gun slightly. “My job is to separate the clean assets from the toxic liabilities. Thorne Global is clean. Damian is the only liability left on the books.”
In the distance, the wailing sound of dozens of police sirens echoed across the Brooklyn waterfront, growing louder and more urgent with every passing second. The flashing red and blue lights of federal tactical vehicles began to illuminate the snow-covered yard behind the warehouse.
“Marcus!” Julian shouted into his wrist comms. “Status on the extraction?”
“We’re clear at the secondary service tunnel beneath Pier 42, Boss!” Marcus’s voice crackled back immediately. “The Feds are breaching the main yard now! They’re heading straight for Damian’s position! We need to vanish right now!”
Julian looked down at his brother one last time. There was no hatred left in his eyes—only the cold, absolute indifference of a man looking at a ghost.

“Enjoy your audit, brother,” Julian said softly.
He turned, grabbed Clara by the hand, and sprinted with her into the shadows of the service tunnel just as the first wave of FBI tactical teams burst onto the loading dock behind them.
