Chapter 18 - Rebuilding the Empire

Three weeks later, Manhattan was finally emerging from the grip of the brutal winter storms. The sun shone brightly over the city, casting brilliant reflections across the glass towers of the financial district.
Inside the forty-fifth-level executive suite of Thorne Global, the shattered glass walls had been completely replaced with upgraded, blast-resistant smart glass. The dark slate floors gleamed under the warm midday sun, completely stripped of the chaos and violence that had transpired there nearly a month ago.
Clara sat at the head of the expansive mahogany conference table, dressed in a sharp, tailored cream-colored designer suit that fit her slender frame perfectly. Before her sat three senior managing partners from the city’s top legitimate corporate law firms, all looking at her with a mixture of deep respect and professional awe.
“As you can see from the finalized forensic report, gentlemen,” Clara said, closing a sleek leather binder in front of her, “all anomalies within Thorne Global’s European transit lines have been fully accounted for and attributed to the rogue unauthorized activities of former Vice President Damian Thorne.”
One of the senior lawyers nodded, signing the bottom of a massive stack of legal clearance documents.
“With Damian Thorne currently in federal custody awaiting trial on twenty-two counts of wire fraud and treason, and with the FBI officially closing their investigation into Mr. Julian Thorne, the corporate restructuring is complete,” the lawyer said, standing up to shake her hand. “You’ve executed a miracle here, Miss Vance. You saved this company from one of the most complex corporate takeover conspiracies in New York history.”
“I simply audited the accounts,” Clara said with a polite, professional smile.
Once the lawyers had filed out of the double mahogany doors, the room fell into a quiet, peaceful silence.
Clara stood up from her chair and walked over to the towering wall of glass, looking out over the panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline. The city didn't look like a concrete graveyard anymore; it looked alive, vibrant, and full of endless possibilities.
Heavy, familiar footsteps echoed across the slate floor behind her.
Strong, warm arms wrapped securely around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, muscular chest. Julian rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the sweet, delicate scent of her shampoo as he looked out at the skyline with her.
“You were brilliant in there,” Julian murmured, his voice a deep, comforting vibration against her ear. “The board of directors is terrified of you. I think they like you more than they like me.”
May you like
Clara leaned back into his embrace, her hands coming up to rest over his strong forearms. “They should be terrified of me. I know where all the bodies are buried in the accounting ledgers.”
“Not all of them,” Julian teased softly, turning her around in his arms to face him. “Only the ones you decided to leave on the books.”
